The West Bund Museum is located in the riverside public open area of Xuhui District, which is rated as a "Paradigmatic Habitat Environment in China". It is regarded as an important carrier for improving the functions of both sides of the Huangpu River, and a core venue of the "Art Museum Avenue" in the West Bund. As an essential platform of public culture space in the region and even in the city, the West Bund Museum aims to create an open and cozy interdisciplinary cultural center, allowing the public to come in and to be a part of it. The audience will be able to experience diversified life of arts, and join hands with the West Bund Museum to create the cultural landscape of the city.

Designed by Sir David Chipperfield and his team, the museum covers a total floor area of about 20,000 m2, and it took six years to complete the construction. "Gallery 1, 2, 3," are the main exhibition space, and will present art exhibitions curated together with the Centre Pompidou, "Gallery 0" will be used for ad hoc exhibitions and "Creativity Gallery" for special art exhibitions for children and public educational events. The underground space features natural lighting, offering functions such as "Auditorium", "Box". The bookstore, cafe, restaurant and other service facilities in the museum are open to the public all year round.
