IT’S a dog’s life in Xuhui District.
The district has set up the city’s first specialized park for pet dogs along Huangpu River to avoid disturbing visitors using the newly opened riverside area, officials said yesterday.
Pets’ Playground, covering 2,500 square meters, is located on grassland near the Long Museum by the riverfront. It has separate zones for large and small dogs. Cleaning tools and plastic bags to remove excrement are offered to pet owners free of charge.
The district will release a dog raising convention and management regulation for the Xuhui riverside areas soon, said Fang Shizhong, director with the district.
Residents have complained of an increasing number of dog owners taking their pets to Huangpu riverside paths, causing both pollution and alarm to walkers afraid of dogs.
“As more citizens are coming to the Xuhui riverside, we are exploring new management methods to solve these new challenges,” Fang said.
The innovative Pets’ Playground has been lauded by visitors to Xuhui’s riverside, according to the West Bund Development Group, which is in charge of the riverside development of the area, known as the West Bund.
A regulation at the entrance of the park stipulates dogs can be unleashed only within the pets’ park. In other areas, owners must use leashes and anti-bite masks.
The owners also must remove any feces caused by their dogs and keep the site clean, according to the regulation.
