Public Open Space of Riverside

3222 Longteng Avenue, Xuhui District Shanghai

West Bund's open space takes its inspiration from the corniches and promenades of Europe: broad, open, waterfront boulevards characteristic of France, Spain, and Italy. In 2010, 3.6 km of walking space along the river, designed to be the "Shanghai Corniche," was opened for public recreation and enjoyment. The space covers around 1 square kilometer, but there is always the possibility for further expansion as West Bund's border with the Huangpu River extends for an additional 4.8 km.

West Bund's open space shows off the striking surrounding architecture by using Shanghai's skyline and natural features as its backdrop. Near the riverside terrace, a 2.5 km railway adjoins a large wharf, which opens onto expansive views of flora, valleys, and the river itself. By the light of the railway signals, Nanpu Platform, Tower Crane Square, and the Marine Tower, steam engines and stones are illuminated, becoming at once rugged, impassive, and inspired. A skywalk has been made from a coal plant's conveyor belt. Pedestrians arriving at the promenade from the convenient bus, bicycle, and tram systems will find themselves in a fascinating, organic environment that creates meaning in the present day with the very real elements of Shanghai's industrial revolution.
