Wilhelm Sasnal, a prominent artist of Poland, will hold his first solo exhibition in China at Qiao Space in the West Bund Culture & Art Pilot Zone from Sep. 8th through 13th. This exhibition originates from the contemporary art collector Qiao Zhibing’s discovery and collection of Wilhelm Sasnal’s works years ago. And hence, Qiao expects to introduce this most celebrated artist and his works to Chinese art lovers. During the exhibition, Qiao will also open his private showroom at the West Bund Culture & Art Pilot Zone—Qiao Space to the public, displaying Wilhelm Sasnal’s new accomplishments of 2015 together with the Hauser & Wirth Gallery. 


About the Artist

Wilhelm Sasnal, born in Poland in 1972, is a major international artist, painter and film maker. His practice embraces comics, posters and photography, and usually focused on the common objects observed in day-to-day reality, like portraits of historical figures and photos of relatives. His painting maintains a tendency of simplicity and complanation, valuing on delivery of the connotation of paintings. With regard to composition, Sasnal maximizes the inner tension of the intersected space by giving prominence to the most eye-catching part and leading people’s attention to the form of his work. Such technique makes a writer of “modern history” out of Sasnal, which is well represented by his earlier work such as bicycles and records, aesthetic subjects of his generation. Sasnal’s work reveals a possibility of self-break for today’s painting under the influence of various media. Based on critical thinking of the society, life and culture, it works out more potentiality of visual image. As a film maker, Sasnal also integrates his filming into painting practice, communicating to his audience through solitude paintings. 

In 1999, Sasnal held his first solo exhibition in Warsaw, and another two exhibitions in Amsterdam Holland and Cologne Germany in 2012. Since then, Sasnal has been frequently seen in the world, holding solo exhibitions in many important galleries and museums world-wide. Now, Sasnal’s works are collected by many world-class museums, such as Guggenheim Museum, Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern Gallery in London, and Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. 


About Qiao Space

Qiao Space is located 2555-5 Longteng Avenue, covering an area of 450sqm, mainly displaying the private collections of Qiao Zhibing, the contemporary art collector and assistant director of Ullens Center for Contemporary Art and Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum. Qiao Zhibing is willing to take adventures in art collection, regardless of the national boundaries or media. Featuring contemporary, diversified and international, his private collection has received appreciation of numerous art lovers home and abroad.
